Keep WordPress Safe From Hackers

Don't let this happen to you

Don't let this happen to you

As web developers and WordPress Developers we take security very serious and you should too. Hackers may be able to get into your blog and erase everything. They can also change your passwords, so you cannot login into your wp-admin. Below are some counter measures you can take to prevent hackers getting into your site and destroying all of your hard work.

First of all, the WordPress codex has a guide on Hardening WordPress. The guide goes through various vulnerabilities and how to protect your WordPress site. A major problem that I run across is that people don’t use very strong passwords for their admin log in. Below are some suggestions made by WordPress Codex:

  1. Make sure your computer is free of spyware, adware, virus infections, malware and running secure and stable versions of applications.
  2. Keep WordPress up to date. The latest WordPress version usually has fixes fr security vulnerabilities.
  3. Make sure your server is running secure, stable versions of all applications and databases. Find a well known and trusted host. If you are on a shared hosting environment, you could still be vulnerable is someone else is compromised. Make sure your web host has taken security measures against this.
  4. Make a strong password. This cannot be stressed enough. do not use your own name, do not use 4 numbers, do not use a dictionary word from any language. Password should have lowercase and uppercase letters and numbers. To make it extra strong, use symbols.

Second of all, use WordPress plugins to protect your site. Here is a list below:

  • WP Security Scan – Scans your WordPress installation for security vulnerabilities and suggests corrective actions. It also has a password generator. It may have a compatibility issue with Dagon Design’s Sitemap Generator plugin.
  • WP-DBManager – Allows you to optimize database, repair database, backup database, restore database, delete backup database , drop/empty tables and run selected queries. Supports automatic scheduling of backing up and optimizing of database. Very useful to restore your database if your website is hacked.

These steps should mitigate the chances of your WordPress site being hacked.
